Wordless Wednesday–Frog and Toad Eggs

Last week my daughter found frog and toad eggs at the pond behind our house, which I have never seen before.  Luckily she came to get me and my camera.

Toad Eggs

Some research after the we got back to the house tells us these are probably toad eggs, because they were all in a line. The eggs were laid in long strands on the bottom of the pond, which then sunk into the mud and looked like sticks.  The only reason my daughter realized what they were was that she noticed the amphibians mating, with a long line of eggs trailing behind them.

Toads

Yes, there are two toads in that picture!  After further exploration we also found some big clusters of frog eggs in a mud puddle nearby.

My daughter wanted to get a bucket and transfer the frog eggs from the mud puddle to the pond to “save” them, but we didn’t. My daughter is studying biology at college with the goal of going into wildlife biology, so these discoveries were a huge thrill for her!

  1. That is so awesome! Thanks for sharing those – I love that kind of thing.
I am currently watching some eagles in Iowa (via the Internet) that have mated, laid 3 eggs and 2 eaglets have hatched… it is SO cool. I keep in on in the background all day long. I saw the first baby feed for the first time today. =)

  2. So cool! I love frogs and can’t wait until we get some in the pond this summer. I love to hear them at night. Love them!

  3. Nice! We have a pond and we caught tadpoles last week, we have them in a kids sized outdoor pool thing with their water from the pond and muck from the bottom of the pond. We pour new water and muck in it each day to ensure they have a more natural habitat. Waiting to see them grow more! It’s open so if they turn into frogs they can get out and back to the pond!
