Last week my daughter found frog and toad eggs at the pond behind our house, which I have never seen before. Luckily she came to get me and my camera.
Some research after the we got back to the house tells us these are probably toad eggs, because they were all in a line. The eggs were laid in long strands on the bottom of the pond, which then sunk into the mud and looked like sticks. The only reason my daughter realized what they were was that she noticed the amphibians mating, with a long line of eggs trailing behind them.
Yes, there are two toads in that picture! After further exploration we also found some big clusters of frog eggs in a mud puddle nearby.
My daughter wanted to get a bucket and transfer the frog eggs from the mud puddle to the pond to “save†them, but we didn’t. My daughter is studying biology at college with the goal of going into wildlife biology, so these discoveries were a huge thrill for her!
Wow, that is so cool!
Those are toad eggs. Toads lay eggs in pearl like strands. Frogs lay eggs in masses.
Whoa! I’ve never seen those before! Really cool!
Wow… I have never seen eggs either!! How cool that they got to see and discover what it was!!
Awesome! I haven’t seen frog or toad eggs in awhile! When we were kids we used to collect bucketfuls and natch them in our plastic swimming pool 🙂
or you know… *hatch – I need spell check for comments 🙂
That’s crazy cool. You need a privacy bar for those two – lol 🙂
That is so awesome! Thanks for sharing those – I love that kind of thing.
I am currently watching some eagles in Iowa (via the Internet) that have mated, laid 3 eggs and 2 eaglets have hatched… it is SO cool. I keep in on in the background all day long. I saw the first baby feed for the first time today. =)
I’ve never seen anything like that before!
So cool! I love frogs and can’t wait until we get some in the pond this summer. I love to hear them at night. Love them!
Nature is so awesome!
A littel ooky but interesting nonetheless!
That is so neat, I’ve never seen toad eggs!
Very cool!! Science is so much fun to discover!
I’ve never seen this before either – neat!
Nice! We have a pond and we caught tadpoles last week, we have them in a kids sized outdoor pool thing with their water from the pond and muck from the bottom of the pond. We pour new water and muck in it each day to ensure they have a more natural habitat. Waiting to see them grow more! It’s open so if they turn into frogs they can get out and back to the pond!
Wow so interesting post I never seen these before..
These photos are really neat! Amazing!
Those are really neat and I’m creeped out by frogs and what not lol.
those are cane toads and actually should be removed! they are invasive and a threat to natives
Thank you for sharing this. Just did a google search to find out what the heck is in my moms pond .. exact same “design”.
