The past few years I’ve joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group to get organic vegetables. We would get a share of vegetables once a week, based on what the farm had harvested that week. It cost about $450 for 26 weeks, and the drawback was we got some stuff we didn’t really want to eat. Last year we got kale or swiss chard every week, and the kids got pretty sick of it (actually I still have kale from last year in the freezer!) So this year we decided to try something different. A bunch of local farms have a website where you can pick out the food you want to order, and then once a week it is delivered to a central location for pick up. This will help me with meal planning, because with the CSA I never knew what I was going to get until I picked it up, but this year I’ll know a few days in advance.
The website will obviously eliminate getting vegetables we don’t want, but it might end up costing more. So I’m going to keep track of what we get and what it costs, and see if it ends up being more than $450 for the season. Here is this week’s order: romaine lettuce, rhubarb, asparagus, feta cheese and buttermilk.
The cost of the veggies was $9.74. I didn’t count the cost of the buttermilk and cheese since that wasn’t available from the CSA. I’ve already learned I need to place my order earlier in the week, since some of the vegetables sold out quickly.
That sounds great. We had the same problem. Whats the website? I wonder if they do it where I live in Northampton, Ma. .
