Adventures in Hiking

When we were camping in the Adirondacks last month we naturally decided to go hiking.  There are so many great trails in the Adirondacks it is kind of overwhelming.  We didn’t want to hike a mountain this time, so we were looking for something different.  Since we aren’t much for planning ahead we just looked at a map and saw “Kunjamuk Cave” and decided that looked interesting, so we set out to find it.  It turns out that thanks to a recently built logging bridge you don’t have to hike to this cave anymore, you can drive right up to it and only have to hike about 50 feet.

The cave was interesting to go in, but as a hike it wasn’t very exciting.  The best thing about it was the blackberry bushes which lined the road.  Since we didn’t have to do any hiking we spent some time eating blackberries.

Now my daughters would have been quite happy to call it a day after hiking 50 feet and stuffing their face with blackberries, but the rest of us wanted to find an actual hike. So we headed to Fawn Lake, which was listed as a two mile hike to a secluded beach.  We found that the trail was a amazingly muddy, here is what our dog Dodger looked like halfway through the hike:

But after trudging through the mud we got to the lake, and it was a beautiful, secluded spot.  The kids and the dog went wading and we spent an hour or so enjoying the location.
