Air Fryer Cod (10 Minutes, No Breading)

This easy air fryer cod cooks in about 10 minutes, flakes apart at the touch of a fork, and doesn’t need any breading to earn a spot in your dinner rotation. There is no dredging in flour, no frying, and no standing over a hot pan while everyone asks when we’re eating. Just season it, set the timer, and walk away.

Cod isn’t cheap, and there’s nothing worse than spending good money on fillets only to overcook them into a rubbery hockey puck. That felt like too much to risk. Then I started making cod in the air fryer, and now it’s one of the meals I reach for all the time.

I skip the breading because good cod doesn’t need a coating to hide behind. Also, let’s be honest, I’m not standing over a three-bowl breading station on a weeknight. That is too messy and life’s too short.

Anne, many thanks for the most easy, delicious cod recipe. Simply fabulous

With a little olive oil, some garlic, and a squeeze of lemon, the fish turns tender and just-firm, with edges that catch a bit of color. It’s also the kind of dinner you can feel good about serving. Cod is lean, high in protein, and light enough that you’re not in a food coma by 8 p.m.

Keep reading, and I’ll show you the exact time and temperature that keeps the fish from drying out, a few easy seasoning variations, how to cook it straight from frozen, and answers to the questions I hear most. It’s one of the fastest fish dinners I make, and the one I trust when I want dinner handled without much thought.

Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Cod: Some grocery stores sell both cod loin and cod fillet. They’re the same fish, cut from different parts, but loin runs thicker and takes a little longer to cook through. I usually buy fillets because they cost less. Any mild white fish works in place of cod, including haddock, sole, or flounder.
  • Lemon juice: Fresh is better. I already have a lemon out for the wedges I serve on the side, so juicing half of it is barely any extra work, but bottled juice is fine too.
  • Olive oil
  • Seasoning: Garlic, paprika, salt, and black pepper round out the seasoning.
Two raw cod fillets on a plate, with small bowls of garlic, paprika, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper arranged around them.

How to Make Air Fryer Cod

  1. Cut the cod fillets into pieces that fit in your air fryer basket, then pat them dry with a paper towel. It’s fine if the fillets still have skin on them.
  2. Mince the garlic, and juice the lemon if you’re using fresh juice instead of bottled.
  3. Line the basket with parchment paper if you have it. Fish is delicate, and the skin tends to stick, so parchment makes cleanup a lot easier. Look for the kind made with holes punched through it so the air still moves.
  4. Put the fillets in the basket skin side down, in a single layer with a little space around each piece. Drizzle the olive oil and lemon juice over the top, then sprinkle on the paprika, salt, pepper, and minced garlic.
  5. Air fry at 370 degrees F for 8-10 minutes. You don’t need to flip the fish partway through.

How Long to Air Fry Cod

Cook the cod at 370 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes. Fish goes from done to overdone fast, so check it at the 8-minute mark instead of waiting for the timer to run out. The most reliable way to know it’s done is an instant-read thermometer: pull the fish at 145 degrees F.

If you don’t have a thermometer, press a fork into the thickest part. It’s ready when the fish flakes easily and looks opaque all the way through, not glassy in the center. If it’s not there yet, cook another 2 to 3 minutes and check again.

Variations on This Recipe

The cooking method here doesn’t change. This is really just about swapping the seasoning on the same fish, at the same time and temperature.

  • Lemon pepper: Skip the paprika and use lemon pepper seasoning instead, then add a little extra lemon juice once the fish is out of the air fryer.
  • Blackened or Cajun: Swap the paprika, salt, and pepper for a store-bought blackening or Cajun seasoning blend when you want more heat.
  • Old Bay: Old Bay in place of the paprika turns this into a classic seafood-shack flavor with almost no extra effort.

Serving Ideas

My favorite way to serve this is topped with a fresh lemon slice and a scattering of chopped herbs, plain and simple. For sides, I keep it easy: a fruit salad, roasted asparagus, or microwave rice all work, and coleslaw or chickpea salad are good make-ahead options.

Cod also works well in tacos. Make a quick garlic aioli, wrap the fish in tortillas, and call it dinner. Or build it into a rice bowl instead. My tartar sauce or garlic aioli sauce are both good for dipping.

How to Store Leftover Cod

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for 3 to 4 minutes, just until hot through.

Cod freezes for up to about 3 months, but tastes best fresh out of the air fryer. If you do freeze it, thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

Tips & Tricks

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Don’t crowd the basket. I always cook the fillets in a single layer with space around each piece so the air can move around the fish. If you need to, cook it in two batches instead of stacking the fillets.
  • Pat the fillets dry before you season them. Wet fish steams instead of getting any texture, and the seasoning slides right off if the fish is still damp.
  • Buy fillets close to the same thickness. A thin tail piece and a thick center-cut piece cooked side by side finish at different times, and you’ll end up pulling one out early to save the other.
  • Save some lemon for after cooking. A fresh squeeze right before serving tastes brighter than lemon that’s cooked with the fish the whole time.
  • The biggest mistake I see with air fryer fish is overcooking it. Cod goes from just right to dry and chalky in about 2 minutes, so check it early and pull it the second it reaches 145 F or flakes.

Reader Questions

Can I cook frozen cod in the air fryer?

Yes. Rinse the frozen fillets under cold water, then air fry at 350 degrees F for about 4 minutes to thaw them. After that, season and cook them the same way as fresh fish, following the times above. Fish thawed this way won’t taste quite as good as fillets that started fresh, but it gets dinner on the table when frozen is what you’ve got. Check the internal temperature before serving, since fillet thickness varies more with frozen fish.

What’s the difference between cod loin and cod fillet?

They’re both cod, cut from different parts of the fish. Loin comes from the thickest section and tends to be a thicker, more even piece. Fillet is thinner and cooks a little faster. If you’re using loin, check it a couple of minutes past the 8-minute mark before you assume it’s done.

Should I use the air fry setting or the bake setting?

Use air fry if your machine has the option. It circulates air more aggressively, which is what gives the outside a little texture even with no breading. Bake works, but the outside stays softer and may need a minute or two more cooking time.

What can I substitute for the lemon juice or olive oil?

Lime juice works fine in place of lemon. For the oil, avocado oil holds up well at this temperature, or use melted butter for a richer flavor.

How do I keep the cod from drying out?

Check at the 8-minute mark instead of waiting for the full 10. Pull it at 145 degrees F, or as soon as it flakes easily with a fork. Thinner fillets and smaller pieces of loin finish closer to 8 minutes, so don’t walk away once you’re past that point.

Can I use a different fish?

Yes. Any mild white fish can be substituted, including haddock, flounder, sole, or halibut. Thicker cuts may need an extra minute or two, so go by temperature or the flake test instead of the clock.

    1 ½ pounds cod fillets
  • Mince the garlic and juice the lemon if using a fresh lemon.

    lemon slices, fresh parsley

Notes

  • Change up the seasoning and use favorites such as Italian seasoning, Old Bay, or other spices to suit your tastes.
