🥔Ingredient Notes

For exact amounts needed see the recipe card below

  • Potatoes: I prefer russet potatoes or Yukon Gold because they have an excellent texture for making chips, but feel free to experiment with other varieties.
  • Olive oil: A touch of olive oil helps the chips crisp up and adds a lovely, subtle flavor. You could also use avocado or another oil with a high smoke point.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt is all you need to season these chips to perfection. Get creative with your seasonings, though – I have many seasoning ideas below.

🥣How to Make Air Fryer Potato Chips

  1. Slice the potatoes: Slice the potatoes as thinly and evenly as possible. This ensures even cooking and crispy chips. If I use a knife, I make 1/8 thick potato slices or I use a mandolin slicer for even thinner chips.
  2. Soak the potatoes: Put the potato slices in a big bowl of cold water. Let them soak for about 30 minutes. This helps remove the natural starch, which allows the chips to become extra crispy.
  3. Dry the potatoes: After soaking, thoroughly pat the potato slices dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Any excess moisture will prevent them from crisping up in the air fryer.
  4. Season the potatoes: Toss the dry potato slices with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Feel free to get creative with your seasonings.
  5. Air fry the potatoes: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F. Place the potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. Cook for 8 minutes, flipping the chips halfway through until they are golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them, as cooking times can vary depending on the thickness of your slices.
  6. Cool and enjoy: Allow the chips to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before diving in. They’ll crisp up even more as they cool!

🍴Serving Ideas

These air fryer potato chips are perfect for snacking but also make a great side dish. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy them:

  • Serve alongside sandwiches, burgers, or hot dogs for a satisfying crunch.
  • Top a salad or bowl of chili with a handful of chips for added texture and flavor.
  • Dunk them in your favorite dip, like whipped feta dip, salsa, or a creamy ranch dressing.
  • Set out a big bowl of these chips at your next party or family gathering for a delicious, crowd-pleasing crunchy snack.

No matter how you serve your air fryer potato chips, they are sure to be a hit with your family and friends.

💭How to Store Air Fryer Potato Chips

Properly storing your homemade air fryer potato chips is essential for maintaining their crispy texture and delicious flavor. First, make sure they are completely cooled before storing them. Cooling them completely will prevent condensation, which can make the chips soggy.

Put the chips in an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. Make sure the container is clean and dry to prevent any moisture from softening the chips. Keep them away from humidity, and they will keep for about 1 week.

🧂Flavor Variations

Potato chips seasoned with salt are a classic that never goes out of style. But when you want to shake things up, try these variations:

  1. Rosemary and Garlic: A classic pairing that delivers an aromatic punch. Combine minced garlic with dried rosemary for a rustic flavor profile.
  2. Smoked Paprika and Sea Salt: Smoked paprika lends a beautiful depth and smoky taste, while sea salt adds a perfect crunchy finish.
  3. Sour Cream and Onion Powder: Recreate this popular flavor at home! Mix onion powder with a dash of powdered buttermilk to get that tangy, creamy taste.
  4. Parmesan and Black Pepper: Grate some fresh parmesan and mix it with freshly ground black pepper for a cheesy, spicy kick.
  5. Ranch: Add some ranch seasoning to the potato for a fantastic flavor combination.
  6. Cajun Seasoning: A mix of garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, paprika, cayenne, and thyme can give your chips a spicy, smoky taste.
  7. Sweet Chili and Lime Zest: A dusting of sweet chili powder paired with lime zest gives a tangy and slightly spicy flavor.
  8. BBQ Use your favorite barbecue seasoning or combine brown sugar, chili powder, paprika, and garlic powder for classic BBQ chips.

⭐Tips

Be sure to check out the step by step instructions

  • Cooking time varies: The cooking time mostly depends on the thickness. 1/8 inch potato slices will need 20-30 minutes of cooking time. The thinner ones can be done in 8-10 minutes.
  • Check them frequently: Pull the basket out every 5 minutes and flip and remove them as they turn brown.
  • Slice them thin: Use a mandolin slicer to slice the potatoes as thinly and uniformly as possible. They will cook at the same rate if they are all the same thickness.
  • Remember to soak: For the crispiest chips, you must soak them in cold water.
  • Dry them thoroughly: After soaking, pat the potato slices completely dry with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Any moisture left on the pieces will cause them to steam instead of crisp up.

Ingredients

  • 3 large potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste

Instructions

  • Make thin potato slices using a mandolin or a sharp knife. A mandolin will give you more uniform pieces. Just watch your fingers. A mandolin is super sharp.
    3 large potatoes
  • Rinse the potato slices and soak them in a bowl of cold water for at least 30 minutes. This removes excess starch so they become crispier.
  • Drain the potatoes and pat dry them properly. Spread them over a paper towel in a single layer, and leave it to air dry for 10 minutes. Dry potato slices give you crispy and crunchy chips.
  • Season the potato slices with oil and salt. Or see the notes section for other seasoning suggestions.
