Harry Potter Midnight Showing

Last night we headed out for the big midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II.  My kids (and I) are huge fans, and we stayed up to buy the book at midnight when it came out in 2007, so of course we had to see the last movie at midnight too.  My husband came along too for the family fun, although he has never read the books.  We had a wonderful time and loved the movie.   I think any fan of the series will be happy with how the movie turned out, but I wanted to write more about the whole midnight showing experience rather than the movie.

After dinner we watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I, so we had it fresh in our memories.  Then we got out the snacks – chocolate pretzel wands, Fudge Flies and Bernie Botts Every Flavored Beans.  I also tried to make Pumpkin Pasties, but they were a major fail and weren’t edible.

However with all the chocolate no one missed the pumpkin pasties.  The jelly beans provided us with some pre-movie entertainment, since my 18 year old vegetarian daughter accidently ate a sausage flavored jelly bean.  She ran around the kitchen trying to wash her mouth out and generally over-reacting.

We had never been to a midnight premier before, so we weren’t sure what to expect at the theater.  It worked out great though; we timed it perfectly and got to the theater just after 10 PM, which is when they let everyone into the theaters.  So we were able to walk right in and didn’t have to wait in line at all, but we were still early enough to find 5 seats together.  Our local theater had Harry Potter playing on 9 screens, all sold out.

It was a long night, but worth it.  I’m glad we went at midnight because it made it an event.  The Harry Potter series has been a large part of my children’s lives for years.  They listened to the audio books over and over, and for a while they wouldn’t go to sleep at night without a Harry Potter audio book in the cd player.  It also provides a great bond that the three of them share.  It is sad in some ways that it is over, and a reminder of how fast my children are growing up.  But I’m glad we were able to enjoy the movie together as a family, especially with my oldest daughter leaving for college soon.

  1. Sounds like a great family night out. Looks like you enjoyed yorseves. I imagine we will wait a few week before we go, but I have been saving my 2 free movie tickets just for this.
It’s wild to see how much the actors have all aged. I never really thought about it until now; but I guess that means we have aged as well.

  2. Sounds like great family fun. My kids are all grown now & I have grandkids, but have to wait until I can snatch one up to go to the show. I totally love Harry Potter, and can’t wait to see the movie.
