I love when I find out that something I use everyday is even more versatile than I realized! Dawn dish soap is wonderful at keeping my kitchen sparkling clean, and I used it for washing dishes all the time. But I was recently asked to put Dawn to the test beyond the sink, and see how it works for cleaning other greasy messes around the house. I used Dawn as a laundry pre-treater, and was impressed with how well it cleaned up tough stains.
My 15 year old son has no problem creating laundry that needs pre-treating. Grass stains from sports, grease stains from the lawn mower, and food stains from dinner are just normal around here. My son loves barbequed chicken, and last week his enthusiasm for his favorite dish ended up leaving BBQ sauce on his shirt. And not one of his grungy t-shirts either, no he managed to stain one of his dressier collared polo shirts.
So I followed the instructions for using Dawn as a laundry pre-treater to deal with this potential disaster.
Step 1:
First I applied the Dawn to the shirt and rubbed it in. I used a little over 1 t to cover the entire stain. For best results you should use less than 2 t. of Dawn in a top-loading washing machine like I have, and it is best to use on cotton or cotton-poly fabrics not delicate ones like silk. If you are in doubt you can spot test with a small drop in a less visible area to make sure the material will not be damaged. Delicate fabrics and 15 year old boys don’t mix well, so this wasn’t an issue for me!
Step 2:
Wash the shirt normally with Tide in your washing machine. I just threw it in with all the rest of my son’s dirty laundry. Note that if you have a HE washing machines it can be sensitive and cycle times may vary.
Results:
The result? The shirt was stain free! (Do not reapply Dawn to the same spot and wash again.)
