Shell Hunting at the Beach

Here are some more pictures of our shell hunting at the beach in New Jersey.  We found the best shells at 2 Mile Beach, part of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge.  Since the beach is hard to get to and swimming isn’t allowed it is pretty deserted, so the shells aren’t picked over.  My kids complained about the long walk it takes to get down to the beach, but it was worth it.  Here is the busy beach on a typical weekday.

My teen daughters loved hunting for shells, even though they didn’t find anything too spectacular.

The best find was this perfect whelk shell, unfortunately it came with the whelk still attached.

They searched along the high tide line and found some scallop shells and razor clam shells.  The most common shell was clams, but we didn’t collect many of them.  There were also lots of whelk shells, although most of them were partial broken.

We had a fun collecting shells, and brought a bunch home.  Of course we have been home for a week now, and the shells are still sitting on the driveway where the kids put them to clean them off.  I’m not sure what they plan to do with them, and my guess is they have no plan, and the shells will sit there until I insist they move them.

  1. Ah, the days of collecting shells that sit on our driveways…you could have them put them in the garden, around plants. Then it doesn't matter if they do anything with them or not.

  2. I remember collecting shells as as a kid. I was looking forward to it when we went to San Diego but all we found were TINY clam shells. I was so sad!

  3. What nice photos! Looks like a beautiful beach! I have never visited a New Jersey beach–somehow you think they might not be that exciting but lately I've seen several photos that show beautiful NJ beaches! ๐Ÿ™‚
