Summer Kayak Trip

Memorial Day is always the start of the summer season. This summer all three of my kids are home, and as they get older and head off to college who knows how more times that will happen! So we are planning to spend lots of time together this summer as a family, enjoying our time together. One thing I don’t plan to spend a lot of time doing is cooking elaborate meals, because we just don’t have the time. We like to be on the go in the summer, out on the water, enjoying the summer sun.

So far this holiday weekend we have gone sailboating in my son’s boat, played a family game, watched a movie together, and taken a kayak and canoe trip down the creek. And today we are planning to go to a local park for a family cookout.

This has been a busy weekend, and hopefully the first of many fun weekends this summer.  There is a new movie in theaters all about the importance of family, Blended, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. We have enjoyed their previous movies like 50 First Dates, and can’t wait to see this one too.

Parts of this weekend have definitely seemed like an Adam Sandler movie for us! If I had been watching a comedy movie and the guide renting the kayaks indicated the trip route we planned was unusual and said, “There might be a few tree limbs down,” I would have realized that was foreshadowing. But instead we cluelessly started paddling, only to realize far too late that a few tree limbs down actually means 2 places where massive log jams completely block the creek. This resulted in two grueling portages which involved ankle deep mud, steep banks, plants that left stinging red welts on our legs and swarms of mosquitoes. There was plenty of slapstick comedy involved in our journey, that is for sure!

As you can imagine after we straggled home covered in mud, with blisters and mosquito bites the last thing I wanted to do was cook dinner. These are the kind of days that call for convenience foods, like Tyson Grilled & Ready Chicken.
