One of my daughters got a tie-dye kit for Christmas, but since tie-dye is an outdoor activity we saved it for the summer. Doing tie-dye is lots of fun, but a big mess too, so we only do it every few years. I’m always amazed at how good the shirts come out, it seems like it is almost impossible to mess up tie-dye. First we picked patterns and rubber-banded the shirts.
Then after the shirts soaked in a soda ash solution we mixed up the dye and squirted it on. The kids picked yellow, blue, green and purple for the dye colors.
Then we put them in plastic bags and let them sit overnight. After 24 hours we cut off the rubber bands and rinsed the shirts in cold water until the water ran clear. This was messy, the kids ended up getting dye all over the laundry room wall.
Then after the shirts dried we washed them in cold water and they were ready to wear.
