Easily make toast for your favorite breakfast recipes, or make favorites like avocado toast with very little effort.

Air fryers come in two basic styles, basket style, and oven style. Clearly, if you have an oven style air fryer, you can toast things like bread slices and bagels, just like you would make toast in a toaster oven.

But if you are new to these kitchen gadgets you might be wondering, “Can you toast bread in air fryer?” The answer is yes. Making air fryer toast is quick and easy. Keep reading for all the details, or jump to my handy summary chart.

❓Basket Style Air Fryer vs Oven Style

There are advantages and disadvantages to every style of air fryer. Personally, I prefer air fryers with a basket because they do a better job of making things really crispy.

I like to use my air fryer for things like sweet potato fries or a blooming onion, and those just don’t get as crisp in the oven style. But one of the misconceptions about this style of air fryer is that it can’t toast things, so you need a separate toaster.

But this isn’t true at all! So in this post, I will include specific directions on toasting bread, English muffins, and bagels in your air fryer.

🍞Making Toast in Air Fryer

To toast, put the slices of your favorite bread in the basket so that they don’t overlap. I can fit 4 pieces of sandwich-sized bread in my 5.8-quart air fryer or 2-4 slices of heartier bread like rye. Keep the bread in a single layer.

Set the air fryer to 400 degrees F for 5 minutes for white bread or 6 minutes for thicker slices of bread. There is no need to preheat air fryer or flip bread slices over, it will brown on both sides.

When you are done, add your favorite toppings to the slices of toast, like peanut butter, almond butter, jelly, or avocado. This is a great way to toast multiple slices of bread at once!

🥐How to Toast English Muffins in the Air Fryer

English muffins are one of my favorite things to make for breakfast since they are delicious with egg sandwiches or with butter and jam. Toasting them is quick and easy.

Split the English muffin with a fork, then put both halves in the basket without them touching or overlapping. Set the air fryer at 400 degrees F for 4 minutes.

Once they are warm and toasted, the butter will melt easily into all the nooks and crannies for deliciously buttery English muffins.

🥯How to Toast Bagels in the Air Fryer

Bagels are another easy type of bread to toast in the air fryer. Because bagels are thicker than bread or English muffins, they need to be toasted at a lower temperature. This ensures they don’t brown too quickly before they are heated through.

Put the bagels in the basket with the cut side up, making sure there is space between them. Set the air fryer at 370 degrees F and toast the bagels for 3-4 minutes until they are golden brown.

If your bagels are frozen, reduce the cooking temperature even more. For frozen bagels, set the temperature at 330 degrees F and cook them for 6 minutes.

Spread them with cream cheese or make a breakfast sandwich and enjoy an easy meal.

🧈Adding Toppings

One huge advantage of making air fryer toast is that you can add toppings to the slices of bread without making a mess. This works especially well with butter, which will melt right in as the bread toasts.

Add a dollop of butter on your bread, English muffin, or bagel before you put it in the basket. Just make sure it is butter side up and toast it as directed above.

The butter will melt and give you a warm and delicious slice of bread dripping with softened butter. Sprinkle some cinnamon sugar or garlic powder into the warm butter for a yummy treat!

🍽️Things can Fly Around in the Air Fryer

An air fryer works by circulating hot air with a powerful fan. This means that very light things can actually be picked up by the air and blown around.

As bread toasts, the moisture is removed, which makes the toasted bread lighter. So theoretically, if the bread gets light enough, it could start flying around.

Now I’ve never had this happen with mine, which is a 5.8-quart Cosori. But air fryers differ in how powerful their fans are and how the air circulates, and it could happen.

So if you are toasting something and you start hearing funny noises like something is blowing around in your basket, stop the air fryer. If the bread is blowing around it is definitely toasted enough!

📝Don’t Use Parchment Paper when Toasting

You can buy parchment paper that is designed to fit into air fryers, with holes already cut out for air circulation. This is nice when you are making something messy or something like cookies that might stick to the basket.

But when you are toasting, don’t put parchment paper in the bottom of the basket. If the bread starts flying around the air fryer the parchment paper will too.

While the bread won’t hurt anything, the parchment paper can stick to the heating element and catch fire. And there is no need for parchment paper anyway because toasting isn’t messy.
