Dodger’s Adoption Story
We adopted our dog Dodger 12 years ago, and he has been an important member of our family ever since. I still remember the day we brought him home from the shelter. My husband and kids had been wanting a dog for years, and I finally gave in and decided the time was right. We have always adopted our pets from shelters, and this would be no exception. I trusted my husband go without me, but he knew I wanted a nice small to medium size dog. So I was pretty surprised and not completely enthused when he came home with Dodger, who is anything but small!
Dodger, who was about a year old, had been brought to the shelter as a stray, and had been there for a month already. The shelter employees told my husband how smart he was and how he managed to unlock his pen and escape. My husband loved this story and knew that Dodger was the kind of active, intelligent dog that would fit right into our family, so he took the risk of annoying me and brought him home. He realized that Dodger would be a tough dog to find a home for, because of his size and how rambunctious and playful he was. Despite his size he was right our family and Dodger became an important member who grew up right along with the kids. In the picture above, taken right after we adopted Dodger, the kids are 6, 9 and 12. Now they are all adults and living on their own or away at school – but Dodger is still here with my husband and me in his Furever Home.
There are so many pets like Dodger who need a home, which is why I am excited about the $25,000 Sweepstakes from Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® and Furever Home™. Dodger has calmed down over the years, although he is still happy, healthy and active. But 13 is old for a dog, and especially for a big dog like Dodger. We have found that he has slowed down a lot over the past year, and is starting to show his age. One of the changes has been his interest in food. Even a year ago when we put food down for him it was gone in a flash and he licked the bowl clean. But sometimes now he picks at his food and walks away before the bowl is empty. I talked to his vet about this, and she recommended we change his diet up and give him some variety and excitement keep him interested. This makes sense, after all he had been eating the same thing day after day, year after year – who wouldn’t get bored?
So the next time I was at my local Price Chopper I bought some Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Super Premium Wet Food for Dogs. They make a variety pack, with 6 tubs of 3 different flavors, just the thing to add excitement to Dodger’s diet. Dodger loves them all! When I get one out he can barely wait for me to open it up and put it down for him and he always licks the bowl clean.
The Nutrish line of foods was created in 2007 inspired by recipes from Rachael Ray’s own kitchen. They make both dog and cat food, and the food is made from simple, wholesome ingredients that include real meat or fish and don’t have any poultry by-product meal or fillers. The company has also always been committed to helping animals in need. A portion of proceeds from Nutrish is donated to The Rachael Ray Foundation, which helps animals in need through Rachael’s Rescue. By the end of last month, September 2017, Rachael’s Rescue has donated more than $21 million dollars to pet charities and other organizations that care for animals. The funds are used for food, medical supplies, treatments, and much more for animals in need. Sadly there are always animals around the country who need help, and Rachael’s Rescue is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals.
