Help me Redecorate my Ugly Bathroom

When we bought this house three years ago there were many things we liked about the house – the fact it is a ranch, the acreage, the open floor plan and the huge kitchen.  But one thing we never liked was the main bathroom.  It has ugly pink fixtures, including the toilet, counters and shower insert.  They are not the pretty pastel pink you see in 1950s houses either, they are a dark purplish pink that doesn’t seem to go with anything.  But now I am going to repaint – and you get to pick the color!

When I was asked to repaint a room to test paint I knew this was the perfect room, because it needs lots of help.  It is currently painted very pale blue, which does nothing for the room.

Before we went shopping for paint we checked out the Glidden paints online.  We used their color palette to determine which color was closest to the bathroom fixture color, and decided the color was Rose Blusher.  Then we played around with the online tools to see how different colors looked with the Rose Blusher.  This helped us focus our plans, but we still made the final choices at the store.

decisions

I headed to Walmart with my daughter, Eleanor and son, Robert.  The plan was that each of us would pick a color, we would buy Glidden Paint Testers in each color, test them on the wall, and ask my blog readers to make the final choice.  The Glidden Paint Testers are great, they are small jars of paint that sell for about $2.94, and best of all they are available in every color.  They are right under the paint chips, you don’t even have to get them mixed.  It is much easier to judge a color by painting it on the wall than taping up a paint chip.  You can watch this slide show of our entire shopping trip on This Moment.

We came back with 3 very different colors, and painted them on the bathroom wall to test them out.  The testers come with a  brush in the lid, which is very handy.  When you are doing three different colors, with two coats of paint for each color the brush in the lid saves a ton of clean up time.  The brush did drip though – so old clothes and a drop cloth are still a good idea.

Our three colors were Lime Sorbet, Clay Bisque and True Turquoise.  I painted them next to the shower insert so you could see how the color looks with that, and with the light colored wooden cabinets.  Leave a comment and let me know which of these three colors you think I should use.  I will total up the votes next Sunday night and use which ever one gets the most votes!  Only votes in the comments count (yes this includes family members, comment or your vote doesn’t count!)

  1. I say go with the true turquoise. The clay bisque is my second choice but I don’t think I could look at lime sorbet for long. Next up, new counter top and toilet?

    • Last time we replaced a toilet my husband dropped it on his toe and limped for months. I doubt I can talk him into replacing another one, his toe nail never grew back right.

      • Ouch… well there’s always a plumber. Not cheap but maybe you know someone… my parents got a new one installed (they purchased it from Sam’s club) for only $75.

  2. Go with the lime color to bring out the beauity in your pink fixtures….then accent with some beachy decor….shells, etc….you will be surprised when you check out what you can find with a beach theme that both those colors will be in the items.

  3. I would have to go with the Lime Sorbet! I think it makes the pink stand out and will give you more decorating room as you won’t have a room that is all one similar shade!

P.S. I painted a large room with Glidden paint a couple of months ago and it is FANTASTIC paint! 🙂

  4. the clay bisque is the best. You could have left Eleanor at home. Of course she was going to choose the green color. I told you two years ago to just swap out the toilet for a plain beige or white one. That way the weird color would get toned down. But it sure will be cheaper to ust paint the walls.

  5. Oh how fun!

I always love lime green but it might be too much for a bathroom, especially with the pink fixtures. If it were me…I’d go with the blue and if you could find a complementary contemporary wallpaper to accent on one wall, maybe change the handles on your cabinets and the faucet to pewter and replace the medicine cabinet with a pewter accent oversize framed mirror and pewter light sconces, it would look really pretty. I know, “wallpaper” but if you chose an updated pattern, wallpaper is really in again! 🙂 I’m not sure how much you are able to spend on the updates but this is a way to really update the whole look without replacing the tub, toilet and sink which is a big cost. You can usually find clearance items or large sales on these items or replace these when you find a sale; kind of a work in progress.

    Love the color choices!

  6. I like the Clay Bisque best. I like having a more tame background then you accessories to bring in color that can be changed out depending on the season, or my mood 🙂
