These Stained Glass Votive Candle Holders aren’t really stained glass, instead they are made by covering the candle holders in colored tissue paper. But they look like stained glass, especially with a candle flickering inside them!
These Faux Stained Glass Votive Candle Holders are the perfect Christmas present project! I bought the supplies for this 2 1/2 years ago, and then never found time to do the the project. I don’t know why we waited so long for this project, because it was very easy to do and not time consuming at all. We had fun experimenting with different colors of tissue paper, and making designs in a variety of colors.
Supplies
- Glass votive candle holders
- Many colors of tissue paper
- Mod Podge, both Paper and Sparkle
- Paint brush
- Votive candles
Mod Podge Waterbase Sealer, Glue and Finish (8-Ounce), CS11211 SparkleArtVerse 100-Piece Tissue Paper, 20 x 26-Inch, Assorted Colors
Anchor Hocking Roly Poly Votive Candle Holder, Set of 12
Directions
The first step is to rip the tissue paper up into small pieces. Three colors for each candle holder seemed about right to my kids and I.
Then we used the Paper Mod Podge to cover the candle holder, and place tissue paper on it in a more or less random pattern, overlapping the pieces a little bit.
Let the Mod Podge dry for about half an hour. Then go back and coat the entire candle holder with the Sparkle Mod Podge, making sure to stick down any little pieces that are sticking up. The sparkles on the glass really make the candle holders festive and add a nice finishing touch.

We are planning to give these as Christmas presents this year, now that we have finally finished the project! What quick and easy Christmas presents are you making this year?
These are really cute. I love how easy they are to make. I feel whoever you give them to for Christmas will really like them.
This looks like such a great craft idea to do with the kids. I agree they would make for great gifts.
My kids would love to make these!
I think my son would love to make these. Thanks for a great idea! They are very pretty.
These are absolutely beautiful! I might need to try this with some friends.
What a great gift idea! I would love for you to share your project on my Meet Up Monday Blog Party!
We made these last Christmas with the Sunday School kids and they loved making them and then trying them out. Fun, easy if a bit messy, but who cares. They looked great.

These votives are absolutely gorgeous! Love them! This is a cute little project for my little girl and I! I pinned your birthday card too! 🙂
I made one and love it! Just one question, though… I only bought the Mod Podge Sparkle, what would be the reason to use Mod Podge Paper first, then final coat with the sparkle? Or does it not matter? Very cute idea!
Thank you for posting this as it exactly what I needed! I’ve had votive candle holders laying around for a few years now and could never figure out the right idea to decorate that clicked.
This idea clicked.
